Detention Center Inmate Gives Birth A Month Early

October 31, 1990

A Howard County Detention Center inmate gave birth to a baby boy yesterday almost one month early, leaving her attorney scrambling to resolve several charges against her and prevent the mother and infant from being separated.

Inmate Lynn A. Fortune, 24, of Columbia, has been held at the Detention Center since Sept. 22 pending trial on multiple charges, including theft and drug possession. She gave birth at Howard General Hospital on Monday and remained a patient at the hospital yesterday.

Her attorney, Public Defender Richard S. Bernhardt, said Fortune was scheduled to appear in Circuit Court tomorrow for a bond reduction hearing on a misdemeanor theft charge.

She also has four cases pending in District Court that are scheduled for trial in January.
