Eugene Griffin, elder at Baptist church

Eugene Griffin, who ministered as an elder at West Baltimore's Olivet Baptist Church, died Oct. 24 at Bon Secours Hospital after a short illness. He was 65 and lived on Norfolk Avenue.

Services for Elder Griffin will be held at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the church, 3500 Edmondson Ave.

Born and educated in Baltimore, he retired in 1979 as a night watchman at the zoo after working 20 years there.

He had been active at Olivet Baptist Church since 1968. He was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, head of a committee that ministered to the sick, a singer with a male chorus called the Gems, a member of the outreach prison ministry and an associate minister.

He was ordained in 1976 and became an elder last year. He opened the Sunday morning services and conducted Friday night prayer services.

He not only sang but played a guitar and other musical instruments at the church. He also preached at the Park Manor Nursing Home.

Survivors include his wife, the former Joyce Harris; and two daughters, Doris Roberts and Myra Elizabeth Griffin. All are of Baltimore.
