MAN CHARGED IN RAPES OF WOMAN, DAUGHTER

An Annapolis man has been charged in the rapes of a woman and her daughter in Cape St. Clair last month.

Michael Richard Smith, 30, of Riverview Drive, was being held in the County Detention Center yesterday.

He was charged with two counts of first-degree rape.

The police said that at about 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 15, a man forced his way into a Cape St. Claire home and raped a woman who lived there. Five days later at about 4:45 a.m., a man forced his way into the same home and raped the woman's 17-year-old daughter.

Investigators also believe the same man is responsible for the sexual assault of a 27-year-old Pasadena woman on Sept. 21. During that incident, the woman was leaving the Wheel Inn in Pasadena when a man offered her a ride home. When he attacked her, a struggle began and the woman's jaw was broken, the police said. Charges in that incident are pending.

Investigators found that Smith had been convicted of several rapes in Florida.

Police said they believe he is also the man who raped a Salisbury motel clerk. County police did not know the date of the Salisbury attack.

Charges in that incident also are pending, the police said.
