Flu Clinics Offer Immunizations

October 30, 1990

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has scheduled annual flu clinics for county residents.

Those who should consider receiving a flu shot include county residents who are healthy and older than 65; residents who have long-term heart and lung disease, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, anemia or asthma; residents who have certain cancers or immunological disorders (such as those infected with the AIDS virus). If you are not sure if you should receive a flu shot contact your physician.

Flu is a viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs that can make someone of any age sick. When you get the flu, you usually have a fever, chills, cough and sometimes a runny nose. The flu usually causes soreness and aches in your back, arms and legs. As with other diseases flu is not life-threatening in healthy individuals, however older citizens and those with health problems are more likely to become seriously ill or to be hospitalized by the flu. The groups listed above are those who should protect themselves by getting a flu shot.

Medical professionals and others who come in to contact with high risk patients should also received flu shots.

Flu season is usually from late fall to early spring. The flu vaccine only protects you for one season, annual shots are necessary for continued protection.
