Hyattsville duckpinner wins pro tournament in Connecticut

Jeff Pyles of Hyattsville, bowling 535 for three games, swept to the championship and $2,200 in the Duckpin Professional Bowlers Association tour stop at Holiday Lanes in Manchester, Conn.

Pyles, winning his second tour championship, was fourth after the qualifying rounds and climbed the ladder to take the title. Pyles defeated Ken Mumaw ($550) of Baltimore, 170-111, and Frank Smith ($660), of Providence, R.I., 171-144, then beat Jeff Ferrand of Salisbury, 194-174, in the championship match. Ferrand won $1,100.

In other ladder matches, Mumaw defeated Danny Shipley ($450) of Baltimore, 156-150, and John DePalma ($500) of Attleboro, Mass., 141-136.

Pyles last championship had come in May at Greenway Bowl East.

The next stop on the DPBA tour will be the Masters, Nov. 16-18, at Fair Lanes Westview. For more information, call 744-4000.

* The Tri-State Mini Tenpin Tour will begin Sunday at North Garrett Lanes in Grantsville. The tour, directed by Don Parsons, will be held until May 19, 1991 at lanes in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The next Maryland stop will be Feb. 3 in Cumberland, and the tour returns to North Garrett Lanes Feb. 24. The tour ends with the Tournament of Champions May 19 at The Bowler in LaVale.
