MARIA'S CARRY OUT, Perring Parkway Shopping Center. Open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday. 661-6820.
Every little shopping center seems to have a carryout shop. They all offer just what you would expect: submarines, pizza, Italian dishes and Greek salads. The pizzas aren't perfect but the subs are substantial.
Maria's Carry Out fills the bill for the Perring Parkway Shopping Center, just inside the county line in northeast Baltimore. Since the establishments are stretched out in a long line, you'll have to look to find it. But you'll see it a few stores down from the bank at the southern end.
Maria's opens for breakfast weekday mornings at 8, offering several "egg and" sandwiches for less than $2.
After that, there's two dozen varieties of submarines, ranging from about $2 for a half to less than $6 for a whole. A cheesesteak sub for $5.10 was quite acceptable. Order a whole sub and you get a free one-liter of soft drink. My daughter's roast beef half-sub ($2.20) was good enough that she wished she'd ordered a whole.
Pizza comes in three sizes (10-, 12- and 16-inch pies) and costs between $4 and $11.
Should you decide to eat in, there is seating for 32. Three pinball machines are there for after-dinner entertainment.
And, of course, there's plenty of free parking, just like at every other little shopping center.
