Fedorov paces Red Wings, 6-0

DETROIT -- Sergei Fedorov, who walked away from the Soviet national team before the start of the Goodwill Games, had two goals and an assist, and goalie Tim Cheveldae earned his first National Hockey League shutout in the Detroit Red Wings's 6-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night.

It was the Red Wings' fifth straight triumph at home.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Troy Crowder scored his first two NHL goals, and New Jersey scored six times in the second period to defeat New York.

The Devils out-shot the Islanders, 52-15, winning for only the third time at Nassau Coliseum, where they are 3-38-6 since entering the NHL as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974.

Canadiens 5, Penguins 4

PITTSBURGH -- Eric Desjardins and Mathieu Schneider scored 38 seconds apart for Montreal, which rallied in the last three minutes to beat Pittsburgh.

The Penguins scored a pair of power-play goals for a 4-3 lead before Desjardins tied the score with three minutes left. Schneider then beat goalie Tom Barrasso with a 40-foot slap shot on the glove side to for the winning goal.

Pittsburgh is 1-5-1 since winning its first two games.
