Prisons chief to retire

October 23, 1990

Elmanus "Al" Herndon today announced his retirement as acting commissioner of the state's Division of Correction, effective Nov. 2.

The division has been rocked by several controversies in the past year, including the early release of John Frederick Thanos, a prisoner who was later charged with three murders.

Herndon has been with the division since 1963, when he began working as a correctional officer.
