Five people were killed in traffic accidents around Maryland over the weekend, including three people in a car that hit a tree near Randallstown last night.

Baltimore County police said the car was traveling at high speed about 7:30 p.m. on Deer Park Road at Lyons Mill Road near Randallstown.

The driver lost control and hit a tree, killing three of four people in the car. No further details were available last night.

On Saturday night, a Beltway drag race ended in the death of a 17-year-old boy when one of two competing cars spun out of control, throwing the Pikesville teen-ager from the back seat, state police said.

Michael Soybelman of the 100 block of Fourwood Court in Pikesville was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died a short time later.

According to police, he was sitting in the rear of a car drag racing in northbound traffic near Park Heights Avenue at 11:55 p.m. when the driver lost control.

His car, carrying four passengers, went off the road, spun back across traffic and struck a guardrail in the median.

The car continued spinning and hit the guardrail again, ejecting Mr. Soybelman, who landed on the road.

Three other passengers were taken by ambulance to Sinai Hospital.

A 16-year-old boy was treated and released. A 16-year-old and 17-year-old refused to be treated and left, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The driver, a 17-year-old whose name was being withheld because of his age, was given traffic tickets for speeding and reckless driving, and the matter was referred to the state's attorney's office for possible criminal charges.

All five people traveling in the car were juveniles, police said. The other car had not been identified.

Yesterday afternoon, a 72-year-old Reisterstown man was killed when a trailer became detached from a car and struck the victim's pickup truck, Baltimore County traffic police said.

James Barnes Sr., 51, of the 12000 block of Sagamore Forest Lane in Glyndon, was traveling north on Hanover Road in Reisterstown about 3:20 p.m. when an open trailer attached to his 1986 GMS Sierra Classic became detached, police said.

The trailer, which was carrying a 50-gallon barrel of diesel fuel, crossed the road and struck a 1985 Dodge Ram pickup being driven by Bruce Garland, 72, of the 1300 block of Hanover Road, police said.

Mr. Garland was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the accident was under investigation.
