REAL PIZZA CARRYOUT, 8841 Belair Road, Perry Hall. Open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Phone: 256-0220.

Don't let the name mislead you; this little carryout tucked into a tiny strip of shops has more than real pizza to go. There are real soups and salads, real pastas, real Italian baked specialties, real hoagies in three sizes (6-inch, 9-inch and 12-inch) and some real tasty side dishes.

We had a variety of appetites in tow the night we dropped in, so we tasted a little bit of everything. The day's special -- Eggplant Parmesan with garlic bread -- was declared the best bargain at $2.99. It was pretty tasty, too.

From among the side dishes we tried french fries, onion rings and meatballs. The thick, "fat" fries ($1.10) were a welcome change from typical fast-food fare, and the meatballs (three for $1.75) were declared very good by the 3-year-old who ate them sauce-first.

The carryout also has a huge list of hoagies. The 9-inch steak slathered with mushrooms and cheese ($4.20) was a big hit with the heartiest appetite in our group.

Real pizzas come in two styles -- thin crust and Sicilian -- and in two sizes -- 12-inch and 16-inch. The 12-inch pepperoni ($5.50) and a small Greek salad ($2.40) was more than enough dinner for two people.

Probably the most amazing thing about our trip to Real Pizza was that our entire order was ready in about 10 minutes and everything was still hot when we got home.
