Starr Backs Hike In Hotel-motel Tax

October 18, 1990

Gerald P. Starr, Republican District 1 County Council candidate, wants to increase the occupancy tax on hotel and motel rentals, using the proceeds to help pay for police and fire services.

Out-of-town residents who rent hotels and motels use county roads, public utilities, recreation and park facilities and police, fire and emergency services, Starr said.

Increasing the tax would bring in more than $1 million, Starr said, which he wants to put toward police and fire services.

Democrat Joan Cadden, District 31 candidate for the House of Delegates, has been endorsed by the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County.

Cadden, a former school board member, was "overwhelmingly" chosen by representatives from each of the county's 117 schools, TAAAC president Thomas J. Paolino said.

"Joan Cadden has demonstrated her support for education and for educators during the years she served both as a school activist in North County, the years she served on the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County and the years she served as the County Council of PTAs legislative chairperson," Paolino said.

Cadden has joined the United 31 ticket, headed by Sen. Philip Jimeno, D-Brooklyn Park, and including delegates W. Ray Huff, D-Pasadena, and Charles W. "Stokes" Kolodziejski, D-Carvel Beach. All have been endorsed by TAAAC.

Also, Democratic County Council candidates George Bachman (District 1), Edward Middlebrooks (District 2) and Linda Gilligan (District 5) have been endorsed by the teachers' association.

Bachman, a former council chairman, "was a staunch advocate of both education and teachers" during his previous tenure on the council, TAAAC president Thomas J. Paolino said.

Gilligan's positions on education issues "demonstrate that she will be a staunch supporter of education and educators," he said.
