Essex falls to No. 1 JuCo team, 2-1

October 17, 1990

Montgomery College-Rockville (14-0-1) made its No. 1 soccer ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll stand up with a 2-1 victory over No. 14 Essex Community College (9-4-1) yesterday.

This was another in a long line of physical struggles between these two rivals, but it will be remembered more for back-to-back mistakes by the respective goalkeepers.

At the 67-minute mark, Rockville's Steve Gallant lofted a free kick from the 18-yard stripe. The ball curved around the near post into the goal, as keeper Jason Layfield, apparently thinking it was supposed to be an indirect kick, made no effort to make what would have been a relatively easy save.

Eleven minutes later, Montgomery-Rockville keeper George Garbis saw a shot by Joe Collins go through his upraised hands. Victor Martins broke the tie in the 82nd minute with a head ball from 15 yards out that carried into the upper part of the goal, as Layfield made a leaping effort to deflect it.

The first half was a standoff. Essex dominated the second and had a 13-2 shot margin.
