Joseph C. Oursler Jr., assistant principal at Franklin Middle School in Reisterstown, died Saturday after an apparent heart attack in Pittsburgh, where he was attending a wedding. He was 53 and lived in Eldersburg.

Services for Mr. Oursler were being today at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Sykesville.

Before his three years as assistant principal at Franklin, he held the same post at Hereford High School for about six years.

He began his career in the Baltimore County school system in 1959 as a mathematics and science teacher.

A lay speaker at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, he was a former Sunday school teacher and youth adviser at the Milford Mill United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, the former Nancy Wilson; two daughters, Lisa C. Oursler of Wilmington, Del., and Susan E. Oursler of Eldersburg; and his mother, Rosalie Antkowiak Oursler of Marriottsville.
