BUCK COMPLETES RECRUIT TRAINING

Marine Pvt. Kevin D. Buck, son of John R. and Connie L. Buck of Sykesville, has completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, N.C.

Buck gained proficiency in a variety of military skills including first aid, rifle marksmanship and close order drill.

A 1987 graduate of Liberty High School, he joined the Marine Corps in April 1990.

SHUMAR DECORATED WITH MERIT MEDAL

Capt. Mary B. Shumar, daughter of Harry J. Short of Sykesville, has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

The medal is awarded specifically for outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement or service to the United States. Shumar is a cost analysis officer.

The captain is a 1984 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a 1980 graduate of Westminster High School.

YANG COMMISSIONED SECOND LIEUTENANT

Newman Yang, son of Jentai and Julie Tsu-Wu Yang of Columbia, was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Lieutenant Yang was awarded a bachelor of science degree and is scheduled to attend training in the infantry.

He is a 1986 graduate of Centennial High SChool.

TRAINING COMPLETED BY AIRMAN HOLMES

Navy Airman Recruit Todd D. Holmes of Columbia has completed the Aviation Support Equipment Technician course at Naval Air Technical Training Center in Millington, Tenn.

During the 17-week course, Holmes received instruction on the inspection, maintenance and repair of basic hydraulic systems; and the operation of automotive electrical systems, power generating equipment and air-conditioning systems.

A 1989 graduate of Hammond High School, he joined the Navy in August 1989.

SGT. KIRK ARRIVES FOR PORTUGAL DUTY

Air Force Staff Sgt. Russell D. Kirk, son of Kevin M. Kirk of Ellicott City, has recently arrived for duty in Portugal.

The sergeant, a public affairs specialist with the 1605th Military Airlift Support Wing, is a 1979 graduate of Mount Hebron High School.

SCHMITZ RECEIVES EARLY COMMISSION

ROTC Cadet Michael J. Schmitz, son of Ken B. and Elaine M. Schmitz of Ellicott City, has been commissioned a second lieutenant under the Army's Early Commissioning Program.

The program allows a cadet who has completed all the military science requirements to become a member of either an Army National Guard or Reserve unit.
