FREEBIES, 9313 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City. Open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Phone: 465-8838.

Going west from Baltimore to see the leaves on a weeken

drive? Here's a great short stop on the way out Route 40 West. This restaurant and carryout offers, among other things, two pizzas for the price of one.

The food is less expensive than your average fast food, and there is a nice place to sit down and eat if you choose not to take out.

A 10-inch pizza is $5.99; 12-inch is $7.99 and a 16-inch is $9.99. Freebies offers all the usual toppings, from pepperoni and sausage to mushrooms and anchovies. And get this -- for $2.71 you can get two slices of cheese pizza and a regular drink.

Subs are two-for-one as well. A half sub is $3.99 and a whole is $7.98. My favorite is a steak sub with green peppers -- and remember, you get two for that price. All subs include lettuce, tomato, mayo, relish, onions and hot peppers.

There are also deli-style sandwiches, from tuna to hamburgers. A crab cake sandwich is reasonably priced at $4 (the crab cake is good but it is fried).

There's self-service for the drinks, but that's not too much to ask when you're getting so many bargains.

The courteous staff wear up-scale red or blue T-shirts with "Freebies" printed on them, and service is with a smile.
