Second-year striker Guy Furfaro is out, and highly regarded draft choices Chris Simon and Chris Haywood are in for the Baltimore Blast.

Coach Kenny Cooper said yesterday he has decided to release Furfaro and sign Simon, a midfielder, and Haywood, a forward, in an attempt to add speed to the team.

The moves bring the roster into sharper focus, with 19 players remaining to fill 18 spots.

Cooper said he will complete the roster for the Oct. 20 season opener after the team plays its final preseason games tomorrow night and Saturday night against the Cleveland Force in North Carolina (Charlotte tomorrow and Greensboro Saturday).

Cooper said he is high on second-round draft choice Dominic Feltham, a midfielder from the University of Maryland, but if he signs Feltham, he must release another returning player.

Furfaro, the team's 1989 second-round draft pick from Philadelphia Textile, and Freddie Thompson were returnees cut in the past week.

Furfaro was used sparingly last season, playing in 21 games (four goals, two assists).

Simon, a fourth-round choice from James Madison University, has been the biggest surprise of training camp and the preseason.

"Chris Simon has breakaway speed," Cooper said, "and he's the kind of player who scores in all situations."

NOTES: Tim Wittman (lower-back strain) missed practice, and said he will not accompany the team to Charlotte and Greensboro.
