No. 1 Howard tops No. 8 Atholton, 1-0

Erin Reid's header with 4 minutes, 38 seconds left in the game gave No. 1 Howard a 1-0 soccer victory over No. 8 Atholton last night at Howard.

The win kept alive the Lions' 22-game unbeaten streak.

Atholton (6-1) played a physical game in the first half, winning the majority of the balls in the air and out-tackling Howard (7-0).

But Howard's defense, led by sweeper Jon Armstrong, bottled up Atholton's top scoring threat, Tony Dedmond.

Atholton goalie Kori Hunter (13 saves) played an outstanding game. He had no chance on the game-winning goal.

The play developed on a kick by Armstrong into the right corner. Josh Smith then booted a perfect pass to outside midfielder Reid, who cut to the net without a defender on him.

Reid's diving header beat Hunter inside the left post. Reid and Hunter are first cousins.

"We played the intense, rugged style of game we wanted to in the first half, but then we got tired," Atholton coach Reg Hahne said. "Howard started winning the midfield in the second half."

Armstrong said: "We had trouble getting started after Friday's win over Oakland Mills. It was hard to get up, and we were unlucky offensively."
