October 10, 1990

Nineteen people were injured near Westover on the Eastern Shore last night when a pickup truck collided with a van carrying a corrections officer and 14 inmates from the Poplar Hill Pre-Release Unit.

State police said the inmates were returning to the Quantico facility from a vocational class in Crisfield when the accident occurred in a northbound lane of Route 413 near Route 361.

The collision caused the van to smash into a telephone pole. Fifteen of the injured were sent to Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury and four were sent to McCready Hospital in Crisfield. Their condition and other details were not immediately available.
