New fares for vans offered through the Department of Aging have been approved by the Public Service Commission and will start Oct. 29.
The van service is mainly for elderly and handicapped people, but is also available to the general public. It is operated by The new fares are $1 to $3 for seniors and the handicapped, depending on the distance, and $2 to $6 for the general public.
Another change started earlier this month is that on-demand service for things such as grocery shopping and doctor visits are limited to one two-way trip per person each week.
Department of Aging director Jolene Sullivan said the new fares and limits on trips are needed because of reduced federal subsidies and a need to provide transportation more efficiently.
