ELDERSBURG - A 35-year-old Wendy Road man was killed Thursday when his pickup truck ran off the road and flipped over, police said.

Howard William Izzett was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Church Road near Sunnydale Way in Reisterstown.

Police said Izzett appeared to lose control of the truck, causing the 11:40 p.m. accident.

EMMITSBURG -- Democratic Congresswoman Beverly B. Byron will deliver a tribute to fallen firefighters Oct. 14 at the National Fire Academy.

The speech will be part of the Ninth Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service to honor 113 career and volunteer firefighters who lost their lives in the course of duty during 1989.

Fire departments throughout Maryland will lower their flags to half-mast, sound sirens at noon, and observe a moment of silence to honor those who have died.

FINKSBURG -- A gas leak on Route 140 in front of the Finksburg Plaza tied up traffic for more than an hour around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Reese, Gamber, Reisterstown and Glyndon volunteer fire companies responded to the scene and clamped the line until workers from Baltimore Gas and Electric could fix the leak.

Reese Capt. Donald Love said the gas line was ruptured by construction workers digging with a backhoe at the site.

State police in Westminster shut down the eastbound lanes of Route 140 while the rupture was fixed.
