JHU engineering school opens new satellite center near BWI

The Johns Hopkins School of Engineering has opened its newest satellite facility in the Dorsey Business Park near the Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

The school is leasing 11,000 square feet in the 80,000-square-foot Dorsey Center, which recently opened. The building was developed by the Douglas Legum Development Inc. Columbia Design Collective Inc. was the architect.

The Dorsey Center, which was completed in 1988, is about 70 percent leased.

Hopkins said its new location replaces a smaller facility that was nearby.

The new center offers courses taught in the part-time graduate engineering degree program. The building also is the site of the school's new microwave engineering laboratory, which allows studies to develop microwave chips.

Hopkins said it needed additional space to respond to an increasing number of students enrolling in the school's continuing professional programs. Johns Hopkins awards one of the largest number of engineering master's degrees in the country.

Columbus Day ceremonies were held Monday at the site of the proposed Christopher Columbus Center of Marine Research and Exploration on Pier 5 in Baltimore.

The $200 million center is to be a educational and research facility as well as a tourist attraction. It is scheduled to be completed in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage to the New World.

So far, Congress has appropriated $1.5 million toward the project for planning and design. The project's proponents are seeking between $6 million and $11 million in federal dollars this year to begin construction in the spring.

British architect Richard Rogers is designing the center.

The 66-year-old Oles Envelope Corp. has begun expanding its manufacturing facilities with the help of a $7.1 million industrial revenue bond.

The company at 532 E. 25th St. is building a 30,000-square-foot metal addition onto its operation. Metropolitan Contracting Co. Inc. of Govans is the general contractor on the job.

The company employs about 215 people. John R. Young, president and owner of the company, said that with the expansion, the company plans to hire about 75 more people.

The industrial revenue bond, issued by the city, allows the company to build at a lower cost than it could with a traditional lender.

Graphix Unlimited Inc. is the first tenant to lease space in the Owings Mills Commerce Centre, a new business park under development by Continental Realty Corp.

Graphix Unlimited, a distributor of business forms and management service firm, has leased 4,763-square-feet of space Building A at 11460 Cronridge Drive.

The building has a total of 65,400 square feet of office and warehouse space and is one of eight buildings planned for the development. Construction of a second building on the site has begun and is scheduled to be completed in April.

Beck, Powell and Parsons is the project architect.

The center is located on 35 acres within the Business Center at Owings Mills.

The project recently received a boost with the opening of the new section of Owings Mills Boulevard. Scott Sellman, director of leasing for Continental Realty Corp., said the new road provides direct access to the center.

Following are recent commercial real estate transactions:

* Shared Expressions, a specialty store of custom photo T-shirt and related items, has leased 850 square feet of space at the Carrolltowne Mall on Liberty Road in Eldersburg, according to Erwin L. Greenberg Commercial Corp.

* The Baltimore Community Relations Commission has leased 7,725 square feet of space at the Equitable Building, 10 N. Calvert St., according to the Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Services.

* Harrison-Peck Printing Inc., has leased 1,620 square feet of space at the McGuckian industrial park on Legion Avenue in Annapolis, according to Manis & Wright Realty.

* Reardon Spring River Corp., manufacturers and sellers of canoes, has leased 3,400 square feet space at 222 Severn Ave. in Annapolis, according to Manis & Wright Realty.

* Mastercare Services Inc., has leased 800 square feet of space at the Lan Lea complex, 1729 York Road, according to Kenilworth Equities, Ltd.

* Thorn International Rentals has leased 3,960 square feet of space at the Northwood Shopping Center, 1562 Havenwood Road, and 6,700 square feet of space at 3903-05 Eastern Ave., according to Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Services.

* Johns Hopkins University has leased 15,000 square feet of space in the Clipper Mill Industrial Park, 1798 Union Ave., according to Kayne/Levin/Neilson/Bavar Realtors.

* Outokumpu EcoEnergy Inc., has leased 7,517 square feet of space on the Owings Mills Corporate Campus, 10055 Red Run Blvd., according to Kayne/Levin/Neilson/Bavar Realtors.

* Baltimore Reads, Inc./Baltimore Literary Corp., has leased 9,400 square feet of space at 2433-2435 N. Calvert St., according to Kayne/Levin/Neilson/Bavar Realtors.

* G&S Recycling Corp. has leased 38,000 square feet of space at 1006 Haverhill Road, according to Kayne/Levin/Neilson/Bavar Realtors.
