CURRENT volunteers' news and needs:

''Healing a River for the Life of the Chesapeake'' is a volunteeproject for Maryland's Community Service Day on Saturday, Oct. 13, when some 6,000 volunteers in counties from Garrett to St. Mary's will clean up areas around the Potomac River. Johns Hopkins Oncology Nutrition Service wants adult and student volunteers to provide clerical and support services for cancer patients. Free parking, training, meal ticket and liability insurance are provided. 955-2033.

Citizens Against Spousal Assault (CASA) of Howard County wants volunteers to answer the help line, work in the main office and provide child care. Call 997-0304.

Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute's Retinal Vascular Center wants men and women ages 59 to 74 for a 10-year eye study. They must be in good health with no history of recurrent cardiovascular problems. For details, call Sherrie Schenning, 955-2408.

Howard County's Office on Aging's Volunteers Plus Program will host a Volunteer Expo from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Florence Bain Senior Center, 5470 Beaverkill Road in Columbia. Rocks State Park, Jarrettsville in Harford County, wants volunteers for its trail crew. For the winter months, there is trail upkeep, rebuilding and more. Ages 16 or over are welcome. Call the park office at 557-7994 for details.

Baltimore Association for Retarded Citizens needs volunteer gift wrappers for its booth at Kenilworth in Towson between Nov. 23 and Dec. 24. Schedules can be flexible. Call Gina Como, 323-5600.

Susquehannock Environmental Center needs volunteers to help unload recyclable items from vehicles plus other tasks at the North Tollgate Road site open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. 836-9371.

Maryland Rehabilitation Center wants volunteer library aides for disabled adults. Call 554-3014.
