State plans 4 hearings on auto insurance rates

The Maryland Insurance Division plans to hold four public hearings in the next two weeks on requests to raise private passenger automobile insurance rates.

The companies requesting the increases are: State Farm Insurance Group, Hartford Underwriters Insurance Co., Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies, Harleysville Mutual Insurance Co. and the Huron Insurance Co. All the hearings are to be held in room 15 at 501 St. Paul Place, Baltimore.

State Farm, the largest automobile insurer in the state, is asking for an average 2.8 percent increase for its State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. and an average 9.4 percent increase for its State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. The hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18 at 9 a.m.

Tomorrow, a hearing is to be held on an average 7 percent rate request from Harleysville and Huron. That hearing is to start at 10 a.m.

On Friday, the Insurance Division is to hear from Fireman's Fund, which is proposing an average 3.3 percent increase. The hearing is to start at 10 a.m. The Hartford request for a average 4 percent increase is to be heard on Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. The hearings are open to the public.
