Loyola beats Hartford to win tournament, 1-0

Loyola College's men's soccer team won the 15th Annual Loyola/Budweiser Invitational Soccer Tournament yesterday, with a 1-0 victory over Hartford at Curley Field.

Jim Garvey scored the first goal of his college career with 6 minutes, 15 seconds left in the game to extend the Greyhounds' non-losing streak to 13, their longest such streak since the 1987 season.

In the consolation match, Hector Cuevas scored a goal and had an assist, as Fairleigh Dickinson defeated St. Peter's, 4-0.

* The University of Maryland men's soccer team got first-half goals from Nigel Burdett and Paul Boardman to defeat Wake Forest, 2-1, in Winston-Salem, N.C. Goalie Carmine Isaaco had seven saves for Maryland (7-4-1).

* Pat Pap's goal midway through the first half led Navy's men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over West Virginia in Annapolis. Goalies John McVay and Van States shared the shutout for Navy (6-7).

* Navy men's water polo team, ranked 13th nationally, won its fourth straight match, downing Slippery Rock, 14-10. Junior Luis Nicolao had five goals and two assists for Navy (12-2).

* Navy women's volleyball coach Jan Dainard recorded her 200th career victory on Saturday at the Clarion Invitational, where the Midshipmen placed fifth.
