KIRBY'S CARRY OUT, 410 W. Redwood St. Open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Phone: 539-9268, 752-2607.
Kirby's is a frugal secretary's dream. Nothing on the menu costs more than $5, everything is fresh and the servings are plentiful.
The food is the heartier type -- no sprouts on sunflower-seed bread here. Basic lunchtime fare such as hamburgers, hot dogs, tuna salad, egg salad, grilled cheese sandwiches, soups, subs, chef and toss salads make up the menu. The side orders are cole slaw, potato salad, french fries and onion rings.
But what Kirby's lacks in imagination it makes up for in flavor and generosity. One of the restaurant's choice sandwiches, simply named a club, includes roast beef, ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato, with chips on the side, all for $4.50. And the chef salad ($3.75) is piled high with cold cuts, cheese and lots of veggies. The BLT ($2.25) was the best I've had in a long time. It was made the way it should be, with more than enough bacon.
You can eat in one of Kirby's two dining areas, or at the counter, or, of course, you can carry out. You can even dine alfresco and enjoy the sites, sounds and fumes of West Redwood Street.
Kirby's also has a breakfast menu and daily specials. Just ask Gordon at the counter or Cheryl in the dining room and either one will tell you about the specials with a smile, hon.
