Hunting outlook is promising

Other than for Canada geese, pheasants and woodcock, this year's hunting outlook is promising for Maryland nimrods. And, possibly, goose shooting might be a bit better than originally feared. Possibly.

Fair numbers of honkers are arriving on the upper Eastern Shore and about a week earlier than normal. Hopefully, this is an indication of a slightly better hatch in the Far North than figured, but it could also be that weather has played a role in the early migration.

Muddling the goose situation, not only here but elsewhere in th flyway, is an increasing number of resident Canadas that don't go north to nest. Sometime in the future this could become a major problem in Maryland -- as it has in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

Fair numbers of ducks are also moving in to brighten the outloo for the early Maryland two-day hunt Oct. 19-20.

The effect of significantly increased gypsy moth damage t forests -- especially in Western Maryland -- won't be noticed on wildlife until next year. Squirrels and grouse should be plentiful. Once again, deer hunting should be excellent in all Mid-Atlantic states.

Following is a synopsis of hunting seasons for the more popula species among Maryland hunters here and in nearby states:
