MOUNT AIRY - A Kentucky hospital has offered life-saving surgery to a 33-year-old mother suffering from leukemia.
Susan Hornick, who is undergoing radiation therapy at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, said Lexington Hospital has agreed to perform a bone-marrow transplant, using a partial match from her brother.
Until the offer from Lexington, Hornick had planned to undergo the procedure at Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center at a cost of $185,000.
That hospital may not have accepted a partial-match donor, however, she said.
Hornick has been battling the disease since March 1989, undergoing various chemotherapy and experimental treatments. The community has had several activities to help with the family's medical expenses.
