ELDERSBURG - The Westminster Owl Marching Band opened its fall competition season Saturday, finishing third in the Group III competition at the Liberty Band Extravaganza.
With a score of 67.2, the Owls fell behind the second-place South Carroll Cavaliers, whose score was 67.45. The North Carroll Panthers finished sixth in the group, scoring 57.7.
Lebanon High School from Pennsylvania scored 77.35 to win first place in Group III, the largest category in the competition. Lebanon also captured the traveling trophy from North Hagerstown High, the defending champion, as well as special awards for percussion, color guard and music.
Liberty High School, hosts of the event, presented a non-scored exhibition at the conclusion of the program.
Westminster, North Carroll and Liberty will travel to South Carroll's Cavalier Classic Saturday. The third annual event begins at 6:30 p.m. in Winfield.
Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children under 12.
