Dr. Ruth Margaret Allen, 66, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist, died Friday of cancer at her home in the Long Green area.
A memorial service was being held today at Trinity Episcopal Church, 12400 Manor Road, Long Green.
A hand injury forced Dr. Allen to retire about 15 years ago. She had practiced about 20 years, first in northeast Baltimore and later in Towson.
Dr. Allen helped to establish family planning clinics under the Baltimore County Health Department in the early 1960s and was a volunteer at the House of Ruth.
The Baltimore native grew up here and in Norfolk, Va. She was a 1945 graduate of the College of William and Mary and a 1949 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia.
After an internship at Union Memorial Hospital, she spent two years in the Navy Medical Corps, returning to Baltimore as a resident at Union Memorial and then at Women's Hospital.
She was a member of the staff at Women's Hospital. After the merger that established Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Dr. Allen remained on the staff of the new hospital.
She was a member of the American Women's Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Baltimore County Medical Society, the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Society of Maryland.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Elizabeth Norelli of Charlottesville, Va.; a brother, retired Army Maj. Lewis Daniel Allen of Fayetteville, N.C.; five nephews; a niece; four grandnephews, and four grandnieces.
