A 27-year-old Baltimore man was critically injured last night when a van jumped the center island on West Northern Parkway near the Jones Falls Expressway and hit the man's car head-on.

A witness told Baltimore traffic investigators that the van, traveling west on Northern Parkway, hit a dip in the road about 8:50 p.m., jumped a grassy median 18 feet wide and hit an eastbound car head-on near Rogers Avenue.

David J. Bojanowski of the 2900 block of Whitney Avenue was transported by Medevac helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition. The van's driver, unidentified, was treated at Sinai Hospital but was not seriously injured, police said.

Also last night, James Michael Staus, a 17-year-old Middletown High School student, was killed when the car he was driving west on Bidle Road overturned about half a mile east of Picnic Woods Road in Frederick County.

State police said the Middletown youth tried to pass another vehicle on the two-lane road, lost control, and the car struck a culvert.

He was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. His passenger, Danell Ray Sillman, 16, also of Middletown, was wearing a seat belt and escaped serious injury.
