CBS to launch late-night newscast with Stahl, Kuralt

CBS News will launch a new late- night newscast tonight, which will go head to head with ABC's "Nightline" in many cities.

But in Baltimore, "America Tonight," with hosts Lesley Stahl in Washington and Charles Kuralt in New York, will debut at midnight on WBAL-TV (Channel 11), following reruns of "Who's the Boss?"

CBS gave its affiliates the option of carrying the broadcast live at 11:30 p.m. or taping it and airing it later, which will keep it out of direct competition with "Nightline."

The show grew out of a series of special CBS News broadcasts, "Showdown in the Gulf," which CBS aired Aug. 29 and 30 and Sept. 4, 5, 10 and 11. A spokesman for CBS said tonight's show will include reports on the Persian Gulf, the budget crisis and other news developments of the day.
