Emerson R. Mitchell, Sporting goods retailer

Services for Emerson R. Mitchell, owner of a sporting goods store, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Mitchell-Smith Funeral Home in Havre de Grace.

Mr. Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Havre de Grace, died of cancer Thursday at Harford Memorial Hospital. He was 76.

He owned and operated Mitchell's Sportsmen's Center in Havre de Grace for more than 40 years. For 34 years, he was a member of the Susquehanna Hose Company.

He was awarded a Purple Heart while serving in the Army in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, the former Bessie Urban; and two sisters, Ann Palmer of Havre de Grace and Doris Mooney of the state of California.
