NEWARK, Del. -- No. 13 Maryland and No. 17 Delaware struggled to a scoreless tie in field hockey yesterday. After regulation time, the teams played a 10-minute overtime period and a 10-minute sudden-death period.
This was the second straight year the teams played a scoreless tie, and it was the fifth tie in the 18-game series. The result left Delaware 3-2-1, and Maryland, coached by former Delaware All-American Missy Meharg, 4-3-1. The Terrapins had a 12-8 edge in shots, and Delaware led in corners, 10-9.
The Blue Hens, who were playing their third straight Top 20 foe, restricted Lisa Buente, Maryland's All-American forward, to just three shots. A 20-goal scorer last year, she had 10 goals in her team's first seven games.
