Man slain on Argyle Ave.

September 28, 1990

A 21-year-old Baltimore man was shot fatally yesterday by a masked gunman who later broke into a West Baltimore family's house to escape pursuing police.

Officers said that Curtis Washington, 21, of the 1800 block of North Bethel Street was standing in the 900 block of Argyle Avenue about 5:30 p.m. when a masked gunman approached the crowd he was standing with and began shooting.

Mr. Washington was shot twice and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The gunman ran and was chased by police. The man entered a West Preston Street house through an unlocked door and told family members inside that he would give them money if they stayed quiet, police said.

Police traced the man to the house and arrested him without incident.

Joseph Coates, 28, of the 1600 block of Lochwood Road was charged with first-degree murder and handgun violations. A motive for the shooting was under investigation.
