September 25, 1990

Services for Edith Lemon Fowlkes, a longtime employee of the 1st U.S. Army headquarters at Fort Meade, will be held at noon today at Douglas Memorial Community Church, Lafayette and Madison avenues.

Mrs. Fowlkes, a member of Douglas Memorial Church, died Friday after a long illness. She was 70.

Born in Gloucester, Va., where she received her early education, Mrs. Fowlkes moved with her family to Baltimore as a child and attended city public schools, graduating from Douglass High School in 1938. She graduated from what is now Morgan State University four years later with a bachelor of arts degree.

The former Edith Lemon married James "Archie" Fowlkes, who died in 1962.

She worked for the Army for 30 years, retiring in August 1980. As a government employee she traveled extensively, including trips to Jordan and the Philippines.

She was a dedicated member of Douglas Memorial Community Church, where she served as a co-chairperson of the trustee board, as treasurer and as a member of the finance board, the floral circle and We Are Not Alone, a support group for widowed and single people.

Mrs. Fowlkes is survived by two aunts, three nieces, three nephews, a sister-in-law and other relatives.
