Youth dies in crash with police cruiser in Montgomery Co.

September 24, 1990

Five people were killed in traffic accidents in Maryland over the weekend, including a youth who was thrown from a car in a collision with a Montgomery County police cruiser last night in Gaithersburg, authorities said.

Carlos Canaza, 17, of Gaithersburg was pronounced dead at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital shortly after the 7:30 p.m. collision at the intersection of South Frederick and Cedar avenues.

Police said the youth was riding in a Honda Civic driven by 28-year-old Jose Z. Canaza, who was northbound on South Frederick when he attempted to make a U-turn at Cedar. He drove into the path of a southbound police cruiser driven by Officer Darin C. Magee, who swerved but was unable to avoid hitting the Honda broadside.

Police said that Carlos was thrown through the back window and landed in the passenger side of the patrol car. The Honda overturned, and Mr. Canaza was thrown into a building on South Frederick when his car door flung open, police said.

He was in critical condition at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, while Officer Magee was released after treatment at Shady Grove, authorities said.

In Cecil County at 3 a.m. yesterday, the driver of a 1988 Lincoln was killed when he failed to make a turn at high speed and slammed into a tree. Donald Jones, 35, of Galena was traveling south on Sassafras Road, south of Warwick, when the accident occurred, police said.

According to investigators, the skid marks and other evidence suggested the car was traveling at nearly 100 mph when it drifted out of a curve near Ginns Corner, began to spin and smashed into a large gum tree.

Two people riding on a motorcycle were killed late Saturday in College Park when a car turned into their path, police said.

Killed in the accident were the bike's driver, James D. Ignowski II, 22, of College Park, and his passenger, Vicki L. Morris, 18, of Laurel.

Police said Mr. Ignowski was driving his 1981 Kawasaki south on U.S. 1 about 11 p.m. Saturday when a northbound 1988 Ford Taurus driven by Sheri L. Anderson turned left at the intersection of Maryland 212 into the path of the oncoming bike.

Ms. Anderson, 21, of the 4900 block of Columbia Road in Columbia received minor injuries, police said.

In another accident Saturday, Erick P. Martin, 21, of Rockville was struck by a truck and fatally injured as he stood on Fieldcrest Road in Laytonsville talking to a friend.

Police said Mr. Martin was in the westbound lane near Route 124 about 11:40 p.m. when he was hit by a Toyota 4X4 truck driven by Mark G. Condry, 23, of Olney. No charges were filed, but police said the accident remained under investigation.
