Peddicord, West top PGA Assistant field

Chris Peddicord of Sparrows Point CC, the Middle Atlantic Professional Golfers' Association champion, and defending champion Mike West of Farmington CC in Charlottesville, Va., will seek to continue the section's domination of the Foot-Joy PGA Assistant Professional championship, Wednesday-Friday, at Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, Mass.

Current PGA Tour members Fred Funk (1984) and Webb Heintzelman (1988) are other MAPGA members who won the national title. There will be 44 players in the field, one from each of the PGA's 41 sections, plus Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.

The fourth annual U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur championship will begin Saturday with a 36-hole on-site qualifying format Saturday and next Sunday at Allegheny CC in Sewickley, Pa. The low 64 will advance to match play.

Among the entries are two-time Maryland State champion Jane Fitzgerald, Bonnie Fry, Carol Davies, Sheila Dagucon, Connie Shorb and 1989 semifinalist Sally Voss Krueger, a former tTC Maryland State and Middle Atlantic women's champion living in San Francisco.

A Chartwell CC team headed by assistant professional Dave Long will be one of 126 teams competing in the net division of the annual Oldsmobile Scramble this weekend at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Play will be over three courses in as many days, followed by a cut to the low 24 teams for a final round Oct. 1. Each of the final-round teams will be joined by a player from the LPGA Tour.

The other members of the Chartwell team are Al Gast, Buck Hartman, Karen Parker and Bill Kennedy. Among the LPGA players participating will be Nancy Lopez, Judy Dickinson and 1990 winners Jane Crafter, Maggie Will, Colleen Walker and Cathy Gerring.
