Southwestern ends 11-game winless streak

Jerome Gluver had 187 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns, as Southwestern (1-1, 1-0) ended its 11-game winless streak -- which included 10 straight losses -- with a 27-6 victory over visiting Archbishop Curley (0-2, 0-2) in a Maryland Scholastic Association C Conference game yesterday.

Southwestern, 0-9 last season, had not won a game since defeating Curley, 3-0, on the next-to-last weekend of the 1988 season. The Sabers tied Northwestern, 6-6, the following week.

Daria Davis threw two touchdown passes for Southwestern, and Dana Smith returned a punt 60 yards for a score.

Dunbar 20, Mervo 18

Paul Banks' two touchdown runs helped lift Dunbar (2-0) over visiting Mervo (1-2) in an MSA B Conference inter-division game.

The Poets were paced offensively by Banks (12 carries for 98 yards) and Kevin Washington (five receptions for 75 yards).

South Carroll 26, Glenelg 14

Joe Goodwin passed for 138 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for another touchdown, as No. 12 South Carroll (3-0) defeated visiting Glenelg (2-1).

C.M. Wright 55, N. Harford 0

Kenny Batten, Greg Cooper and Chris Gill each scored two touchdowns, as host and No. 15 C. Milton Wright (3-0, 2-0) routed North Harford (1-2, 1-1) in a Harford County League game. The Mustangs accumulated 361 yards rushing, led by Gill (13 carries, 115 yards) and Batten (eight carries, 104 yards).

Northwestern 34, Southern-B 0

Monte Bowens rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns and Adrian Price threw two touchdown passes to Timmy White, as host Northwestern won its season opener over Southern of Baltimore (1-2).

No. County 35, Q. Anne's 21

John Ray completed 26 of 50 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, and Vernon Dawson rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns, as North County (2-1) defeated Queen Anne's (2-1).

Lake Clifton 38, Walbrook 0

Dewayne Washington threw four touchdown passes to Sam Jones, as Lake Clifton (1-1) routed visiting Walbrook (0-1) in an MSA B Conference inter-division contest.

Glen Burnie 21, Ches.-AA 6

Carlton Ash threw a touchdown pass and ran 48 yards for a touchdown to lead host Glen Burnie (2-1, 1-0) over Chesapeake (0-3, 0-2) in an Anne Arundel County 4A game.

Liberty 23, Howard 0

Eric Snyder rushed for 87 yards and three touchdowns, as host Liberty (2-1) registered its second shutout victory of the season with a win over Howard (1-2).
