Walter E. Werking Steamfitters official

Services for Walter E. Werking, financial secretary of a Steamfitters union local, will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Funeral Home of John C. Miller Inc., 6415 Belair Road.

Mr. Werking, who was 66, died Wednesday after an apparent heart attack at work.

Known to his friends as Ed, Mr. Werking since 1974 had been financial secretary of Steamfitters Local 438 of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industries of the United States and Canada. He lived on Chambers Road.

Before the union job, he worked as a pipefitter for mechanical contractors. He started in 1946 as an apprentice and became a journeyman in 1950. He was active in the local.

Mr. Werking was born in Baltimore and was a graduate of the Polytechnic Institute. He served in the U.S. Army in North Africa during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, the former Gloria M. Ward; a son, Edward James Werking of Sparks; two sisters, Elizabeth Dvorak of Bel Air and Jean Hierstetter of Smithsburg; and a brother, William Werking of Port Tobacco.
