Capitals rookies beat, tie Canadiens

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The Washington Capitals rookies beat the Montreal Canadiens rookies, 5-4, yesterday to complete a two-game series at the Olympic complex. Washington and Montreal played a 2-2 tie Monday night.

Harry Mews, a center who played last year for Northeastern University, scored two goals in the Capitals' victory. Mews' unassisted game-winner came during a power play at 12 minutes, 18 seconds of the third period.

Dave Lorentz, Tim Taylor and Todd Hlusko also scored for the Capitals. Hlusko, Thomas Sjogren, John Slaney and Brian Sakic had assists. Alain Cote, who played with the Baltimore Skipjacks of the American Hockey League last season, had an assist for Montreal, and Herbert Hohenberger, who was in the Washington training camp last season in Columbia, Md., scored for the Canadiens.

In Monday's game, Taylor and Reggie Savage, both expected to play for the Skipjacks, scored for the Capitals. Taylor scored on an assist from Lorentz in the first period, and Savage gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal in the second period on assists from Jeff Greenlaw and Rod Pasma.

Goaltender Byron Dafoe, who will return to the Canadian junior leagues after training camp, played all 60 minutes in both games for Washington.
