Duty Free International has opened a 110,000-square-foot warehouse/distribution and administrative center in Glen Burnie.

The facility at 6691 Baymeadow Drive is located near Duty Free's former building, but is 42,000 square feet larger than the old one, a company spokesman said.

The center was built by Dickinson-Heffner Inc., a local contractor.

The center will house the administrative offices of Samuel Meisel & Co. Inc., Duty Free's diplomatic and wholesale division, which supplies products to embassies in Washington and New York.

Duty free shops are not required to pay an import duty on goods because they are sold only to people leaving the country and to diplomats. For the same reasons, the merchandise is not subject to federal, state or local taxes.

Duty Free International operates 67 duty free and retail stores. The company is the leading operator of duty free stores along the U.S.-Canadian border, one of the main operators of duty free stores in U.S. international airports and the largest supplier of duty free merchandise to foreign diplomats in the U.S. and to ships engaged in international travel.
