Woman's body found behind library

September 18, 1990

The body of a 41-year-old Crofton woman who was last seen when she left home to shop for groceries Sunday morning was discovered yesterday afternoon behind the Crofton Library, Anne Arundel County police said.

Police said the body of Gwyn Dixon Criswell of the 1500 block of Eversham Place was found at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Police had been searching for the woman since her husband reported her missing at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Richard V. Molloy, a police spokesman, said officers began a search for Mrs. Criswell, who worked for the Department of Defense, after they found her car at 9 p.m. Sunday in Annapolis in the possession of a suspected robber.

Mrs. Criswell's 1988 white Plymouth Sundance had been described as the getaway car in a reported purse-snatching at the Thrift Inn on Riva Road at 8 p.m., the police spokesman said.

After failing to find Mrs. Criswell Sunday night, about 35 officers began a foot search at noon yesterday in the woods of Crofton Park. Police said they moved part of the search party to the library after learning from Mrs. Criswell's husband that she might have stopped there.

Mr. Molloy said they located the body within an hour in a wooded area behind the library. Police would not describe the condition of the body or the likely cause of death.

Police arrested Steven Gregory Anderson, 29, of no fixed address, Sunday night. They charged him with one count of auto theft and one count of armed robbery.
