Central Conn. tops UMBC in soccer
Frank Seitz's second-half goal gave visiting Central Connecticut a 1-0 East Coast Conference soccer victory over University of Maryland Baltimore County (3-2) yesterday.
*In Newark, Del., Joe Layfield (Calvert Hall) scored a goal an assisted on another, as Towson State beat Delaware, 2-0, in an ECC soccer game. Barry Stitz (Curley) also scored for the Tigers (3-2, 2-0).
*In Fairfield, Conn., Ron Elliott contributed a goal and assisted on another, and Sean Nolan had two assists, as Loyola (2-1-3) opened its Metro Atlantic Conference season with a 5-0 triumph over Fairfield (0-6).
*In Farmingdale, N.Y., Roberto Ascenzi and Joe Collins scoregoals to lift Essex Community College (2-1-1) past Farmingdale CC (2-1).
*Salisbury State and Virginia Wesleyan won opening-round games in the Salisbury Invitational soccer tournament.
Scott Talley's second-half goal lifted the Sea Gulls to a 1-0 victory over Lynchburg, and Dan MacFarland's two goals led Virginia Wesleyan to a 5-0 triumph over Washington College.
*In Frostburg, Tim Riggs scored two unassisted goals to give Allentown (3-3) a 2-1 victory over Frostburg State. Derrek Woodward scored for the Bobcats (2-1-1).
*In Princess Anne, James Rebbolz scored two goals and MarKavanaugh added one to lead St. Mary's to a 3-2 victory over University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Amadou Wadda and Tony Pak scored for the Hawks.
*In Westminster, Joe McNamee's second-half goal broke a scoreless tie and led Moravian (3-2-1, 1-0) to a 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference-Southwest Section triumph over Western Maryland (2-2, 0-1).
*In Emmitsburg, second-half goals by seniors Even Hytten and Don Barry propelled Mount St. Mary's to a 3-1 victory over Kutztown in the opening round of the Blue Ridge Soccer Tournament. The Mount will take on Indiana (Pa.) University, a 3-2 winner over District of Columbia, in the semifinals.
Navy finished second in the UNC Invitational in Greensboro, ** N.C., behind host North Carolina-Greensboro. Navy went 3-1 in the tournament, defeating Wofford, 15-8, 15-11, 15-11; St. Augustine, 15-2, 10-15, 15-9, 12-15, 15-8; and Slippery Rock, 5-15, 15-11, 15-4, 15-7. Navy's only loss was to UNC-Greensboro, 15-9, 17-15, 15-6.
*St. Mary's defeated Staten Island, 15-10, 8-15, 16-14, but lost to Stockton (N.J.) State, 15-8, 15-8, and to Notre Dame, 15-9, 15-12, in the Stockton State Invitational tournament.
