Portables To Open -- Late

September 16, 1990

The last six of 12 new portable classroom installed at Carroll schools this summer are expected to open this week, school officials said.

Although the school system ordered the units early this year to avoid delays, electrical and plumbing inspections and some minor construction problems have pushed back the openings of units at Taneytown Elementary Annex, Eldersburg, Carrolltowne and Manchester elementaries, and Sykesville and Northwest middle schools.

In the interim, students have been housed in makeshift classrooms on stages and media centers in the school buildings, said Lester P. Surber, supervisor of school facilities and planning.

"The staff has been able to cope," Surber said.

The portables were bought to help the district accommodate an additional 700 students this school year. The system now has 84 relocatables and about 10 percent of the projected 22,000 students will be housed in portable classrooms outside school buildings.
