Gibbons ends 12-game skid, stuns No. 4 City College, 16-12

Cardinal Gibbons, which had lost 12 straight football games, dating back to a winless 1989 season (0-11), upset No. 4 City College, 16-12, last night at Gibbons.

Marty Kolb scored on a short run with three minutes left to lift the Crusaders (1-1, 1-0) over the Knights (0-1, 0-1) in a Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference game. Gibbons rallied from a 12-3 deficit.

Pikesville 12, Loch Raven 6

Phil Efron caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jay Glickson with 3 minutes, 50 seconds remaining to lift visiting Pikesville (2-0, 0-1) over Loch Raven (0-2, 0-1) in a Baltimore County 2A-1A game.

Pikesville ahs exceeded last year's victory total.

Patterson 41, Southwestern 7

No. 17 Patterson also improved to 2-0, as Buddy Edmond completed six of 11 for 119 yards and two touchdowns against visiting Southwestern (0-1). Charles Anderson had four receptions, including both touchdowns, for the losers.

Westminster 37, Dulaney 6

Boomer Warfield, Marty Brennan, Mike Rodgers, Mike Hastings and Jemhal Hogan each ran for touchdowns as No. 11 Westminster (2-0) routed visiting Dulaney (0-2).

S. Carroll 19, Centennial 6

Paul Marcum ran for two touchdowns as No. 18 South Carroll (2-0) beat visiting Centennial (1-1).

Woodlawn 22, Mervo 20

Visiting Woodlawn (1-1) scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including one on a 1-yard pass from Bruce Brown to Adam Bennett with 16 seconds left, to rally from a 14-point halftime deficit. Brown's conversion run after the touchdown was the difference.

St. Mary's 14, St. Paul's 0

Charlie Finnamore ran for two touchdowns as host St. Mary's (3-0, 2-0) defeated defending MSA C Conference champion St. Paul's (1-1, 1-1).

EVT 25, Catonsville 0

Daryl Ray rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, as Eastern Vo-Tech (2-0, 1-0) shut out visiting Catonsville (0-2, 0-1) in a Baltimore County 3A game. The Mavericks intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles.

Chesap'ke-BC 14, Hammond 12

Dave Discuillo completed eight of 16 for 140 yards and a touchdown, as host Chesapeake of Baltimore County (2-0) edged Hammond (0-2). Chesapeake's Derek Ruby had 13 solo tackles and assisted on seven.

Arundel 13, T. Johnson 9

Rodney Steven's two touchdown runs were enough to get Arundel (2-0) past host Thomas Johnson (0-2).

N. Harford 50, H. de Grace 14

Tim Lucky rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown and Mark Bostic ran for 136 and three touchdowns, as host North Harford (1-1, 1-0) routed Havre de Grace (0-2, 0-1) in a Harford County League game and ended an area-worst 13-game losing streak. North Harford outscored Havre de Grace, 36-0, in the second half.

Overlea 8, Parkville 0

John Swigart threw a touchdown pass to Bernard Hopkins and teamed with Phillip Brown on defense to make 23 tackles as Overlea (1-1, 1-0) beat Parkville (0-2, 0-1) in a Baltimore County 3A League game.

M. Mill 20, Towson 14

Bryant Lee returned the opening kickoff 87 yards, then rushed 29 times for 201 yards and another touchdown, as host Milford Mill (1-1, 1-0) beat Towson (0-2, 0-1) in a Baltimore County 1A-2A League game.

Owings Mills 32, S. Point 7

Marlin Matthews ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, as visiting Owings Mills (1-1, 1-0) beat Sparrows Point (0-2, 0-1) in a Baltimore County 1A-2A League game.

Southern-B 15, Carver 8

Southern of Baltimore (1-1) shut out host Carver (0-1) for three quarters.
