Expansion Bid Awarded

WESTMINSTER - City Council members awarded a wastewater treatment plant expansion contract to the lowest bidder Monday night.

Conowago Contractors -- who are working on the upgrade of the plant -- bid $2,394,560 for the project, approximately $1 million lower than the city had estimated.

In other city news:

*Mayor W. Benjamin Brown nominated Margaret Bair to the city Planning and Zoning Commission, filling a vacancy created when Fred L. Plunkert resigned.

The council will meet with Bair and decide the issue at the Sept. 24 meeting.

*Members accepted a $45,000 bid from Bair Truck Center for a dump truck and a $55,001.50 bid from Jeff Barnes Chevrolet for five police cars.

*Planning Director Thomas B. Beyard reported that 4.31 tons were collected from the city's recycling site during the 15 days it was open in August.

He said he expects twice that amount to be collected in September since the facility provides full-time service.

*Members accepted for the city the deed for streets and utilities in the Avondale Run development.
