Montgomery pays back Howard Striders

The Montgomery County Road Runners Club got even with the Howard County Striders in Sunday's Brighton-to-Brookville Challenge, a hilly, seven-mile road race that began and ended at Brighton Dam.

Even though Montgomery had won the Challenge the past two years, the Striders had a leg up on Montgomery this year. In February, the Striders finished second to Baltimore in the Maryland-District of Columbia Road Runners Clubs of America 10-Mile Championship, but behind the first-place finishes of Gerry Clapper and Tom Bowmaster, took second place ahead of Montgomery. This spring, Clapper won Fritzbe's 10K, Montgomery's premier race, as well as the Striders' Clyde's 10K a week later.

So, Montgomery had a score to settle, and Brighton Dam proved the perfect spot.

"It's right on the line between the two counties," said Howard County Striders president Paul Goldenberg.

"It [the result] kind of depends on who tries to get out a decent team," said Montgomery's John Sissala.

This year, Montgomery was the more decent, taking seven of the top 10 places in the male division and eight of 10 in the female. Dominique DaLuz, 30, of Montgomery was the overall winner in 37 minutes, 32 seconds, beating Howard's Rod Young to the finish by nine seconds.

"We stayed pretty close," DaLuz said, "and he [Young] took off in the second mile. I run very well on the hills, and I knew I would catch him on the last two hills. I love it. It's my favorite course."

And, for another year, Montgomery's.
