Jay R. Pfeiffer

Jay R. Pfeiffer, an avid golfer and retired businessman, died Saturday as he and a group of friends were playing golf at the Turf Valley Country Club. The Eldersburg resident was 69.

Services for Mr. Pfeiffer will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Lochearn Presbyterian Church, 3800 Patterson Ave.

Born in Baltimore, he graduated in 1939 from Friends School, where he was an All-Maryland lacrosse goalie. He was a Navy pilot during World War II.

After the war, he took over as the fourth-generation owner of J.P. Pfeiffer and Son Inc. The commercial refrigeration and butcher supply business was on Paca Street in West Baltimore and later moved to Woodlawn. He sold the business in 1981.

He served as a deacon, trustee and elder of Lochearn Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Pfeiffer; two sons, J. Randall Pfeiffer of Sparks and Douglas B. Pfeiffer of Greenspring Valley; a daughter, Wendy Rurka of Greenspring Valley; a sister, Jean Reitz of Sarasota, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
